Rate effects on the uplift capacity of pipelines embedded in clay: Finite element modelling

This paper describes a finite element study of the uplift behaviour plane strain pipe segment embedded in modified Cam clay soil. The primary aim this is to explore role rate effects on capacity and transition between drained undrained using coupled-consolidation analyses. velocities considered modelling cover six orders magnitude allowing rigorous assessment effect loading rate. embedment depth, soil strength profile pipe-soil interface roughness are also investigated. results indicate that range for which response can be ‘partially drained’, as determined from peak resistances, significant exceeds bounds established full flow penetrometers previously reported literature. data suggests excess pore pressures locally at may not reliable means determining whether overall ‘drained’ or ‘undrained’. To address some limitations associated with design guidelines currently used by industry, new approach prediction function proposed applied hypothetical scenario.
